"In this day and age, it's fair to say that pets aren't just animals--they're
also members of the family," 52-year-old Kaoru Yamazaki said.
"More and more, people are realizing that, just like humans, animals also
need special care," she added.
Yamazaki is president of Japan's first two-year college specializing in
animal care studies, Yamazaki Academy in Hachioji City, Tokyo, which will start
accepting students in April.
The academy will train people to look after companion animals, such as pets,
guide dogs and service dogs.
Students will learn about discipline and hygiene management, as well as the
theory and practice of animal care.
The aim is to nurture a new generation of qualified animal nurses.
Yamazaki's father, who founded the world's first vocational college
specializing in canine beauty and cosmetics, died in 1990.
