AR-News: (CA) Britain approves first genetically modified crop

LONDON -- The British government risked an environmental and consumer 
backlash yesterday by giving conditional approval for the first genetically modified 
crop to be planted in British soil for commercial use. However, the 
government's approach to genetically modified crops, often described as "Frankenstein 
foods" in Britain, will be tentative. The corn that can be grown is a cattle 
feed and it must be grown under strict conditions before it gets final approval 
for cultivation.
