MEPs voted on Tuesday to include animal welfare issues in a proposal on
food safety standards.
The proposal would impose strict checks on the food and feed chain, at
every stage from the farm to the restaurant table or supermarket shelf,
via the slaughterhouse.
But the original commission document focused rather on the quality of the
food than the wellbeing of the animals an imbalance MEPs have tried to
redress in the latest compromise thrashed out with national governments.
...
287 MEPs voted in favour of the compromise proposal, with 194 against and
23 abstentions.
