A bull bison from Yellowstone National Park was shot and killed Monday and
seven more were captured as part of an ongoing effort to prevent the animals
from leaving the park.
The bison that was shot had been hazed at least six times over the past
several days and was recently moving onto private land, park officials said. Park
rangers were having trouble controlling the bison's movements and became
concerned about public safety.
"It had become very aggressive," said Cheryl Matthews, a park spokeswoman.
The bull was shot inside Yellowstone's boundary in the Reese Creek drainage.
The carcass will be left for scavengers.
Meanwhile, seven more bull bison were taken to the Stephens Creek facility
and will be sent to slaughter.
