few weeks
WESTERN BUREAU - The ban on the importation of beef from the US could be
lifted within another few weeks, agriculture minister, Roger Clarke, said
yesterday.
"The US Department of Agriculture which is working in collaboration with the
OIE (Office International des Epizootes), seems to have things under control,
and so I believe that some level of importation (of beef) will begin on a
phased basis in a few weeks," Clarke told the Observer.
The US Department of Agriculture, the minister added, is expected to present
documentation to his ministry later this week, which will outline its level of
compliance with the OIE requirements.
"The veterinary people in the US are working with our veterinary people here,
in collaboration with the OIE, and so I foresee something happening soon,"
the agriculture minister stressed.
The OIE is an international organisation headquartered in France, which is
mandated to improve the knowledge and transparency of the world animal health
situation.
