SENDAI -- About 150 dogs and cats were burned to death in a fire that 
destroyed a pet shop in Miyagi Prefecture late Monday night, police said Tuesday.
A shop employee said dogs worth millions of yen each were among the animals 
that perished in the blaze.
At around 11:45 p.m. a fire broke out at Sendai Pet Center in Natori, and 
burned down the structure with a total floor space of some 270 square meters, 
police said. About 150 dogs and cats, as well as fish, fireflies and other kinds 
of animals were burned to death.
Police are investigating the cause of the blaze, suspecting that it may have
