AR-News: (US TX) SPCA crisis: Strays turned away

HOUSTON -- Houston’s SPCA is barking about an overcrowding problem. The 
people in charge say too many stray animals are coming in from the city and county 
and they can no longer handle them. 
The animals at the SPCA are cute, lovable, and all looking for a home. But 
shelter administrators say there are just too many of them. 
“Now our lost and found area can no longer humanely accommodate the growing 
number of stray dogs and cats," said Patti Mercer, President of the Houston 
SPCA. 
Those at the SPCA argue their facility is meant to be a place where owners 
bring unwanted animals, not a dumping ground for strays. But they say that’s 
what it has become.
