The history of Western civilization is decorated with syrupy images of cute, 
cuddly animals displayed to manipulative effect. Our culture’s obsession with 
-- at times, near-rabid love for -- furry and feathered friends has grown so 
great, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give this phenomenon its due. 

Some forms of pet obsession can breed confused priorities. (Yes, a few people 
do treat their pets better than they treat their kids.) But, in general, it’s 
hard to see our collective animal worship as a bad thing. After all, if 
writer Milan Kundera is right that the true test of mankind’s morality is its 
attitude toward animals, then Boston, with one of the highest pet adoption rates in 
the country, may have a lock on altruism.
