BLUFF CREEK, La. (AP) -- The district attorney says he saw no cruelty in a
competition pitting de-tusked feral hogs against dogs trained to hunt them and
grab them by the ear. But health complaints could shut down the operation.
The Feliciana Hog Dog Festival, like other "hog dog rodeos" across the South,
features one-on-one confrontations between dogs and wild pigs.
The pigs' tusks had been snipped with bolt-cutters to reduce the chance of
injuring the dogs, most of which appear to be pit bulls or pit bull mixtures.
Two people who live near the arena criticized it during last week's Feliciana
Parish Police Jury meeting. One of them also went to the parish health unit
-- and that may shut down the operation, operators Kenneth Miley and Charles
"Chuck" Harris Jr. said.
They said a health inspector ordered them to improve their concession stand
"just like it was a restaurant" and to build a treatment facility for the pigs'
waste.
