TOKYO - A cow in northern Japan that was suspected of having mad cow
disease is free of the illness, an official said Monday.
The cow initially tested positive for mad cow last week after being
brought to a slaughterhouse in northern Miyagi prefecture (state).
But more detailed testing on the 16-year, 6-month cow turned up negative,
an Agriculture Ministry spokesman said on condition of anonymity, and it
has been cleared of the disease.
Another suspected case of mad cow disease remains pending.
