A proposed housing development may threaten to cut off wildlife from its
cross-county cruise between Orange and Los Angeles counties. However, developers
say they've made allowances for the wildlife trails. We hope so, because the
corridor is a hard-won preservation trail to ensure the health of a number of
species indigenous to the region.
The 31-mile corridor, that stretches from the Puente Hills to the Cleveland
National Forest is key to not only preserving but strengthening wildlife,
allowing for a mingling of animals from across the region. Important because once
isolated, animals begin to inbreed, which leads to loss of genetic diversity;
they then pass on defects to succeeding generations.
A stream that supplies water to animals, as well as Brea Canyon Road used as
a wildlife bridge lie in an area near the Orange (57) Freeway where 30 percent
of Aera Development's 3,600- home project is proposed.
