WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- The Center for Consumer Freedom released its
annual "Tarnished Halo" Awards which lampoon efforts of environmental and animal
rights groups such as PETA and the Sierra Club. The group also gave Hollywood
star Alec Baldwin an award for its "Meathead" category.
Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA), was awarded a "Tarnished Halo" for her support for convicted criminal and
animal-rights activist Rodney Coronado who has instructed college students how
to build a firebomb from a milk container. Newkirk called him a "fine young
man and a school teacher" even though he was arrested for a series of arsons
set in the early 1990s. PETA gave Coronado $70,000.
The consumer-advocacy group presents such awards each year to "America's most
notorious animal-rights zealots, environmental scaremongers, celebrity
busybodies, self-anointed 'public interest' advocates, trial lawyers, and other food
and beverage activists who claim to 'know what's best for you.'"
