[from Columbia Daily Spectator]

In its fight against animal cruelty in medical research, People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a complaint against Columbia University
last Wednesday. The complaint, directed towards Dr. E. Sander Connolly's
work on baboons, focuses on what PETA believes to be experiments conducted
in violation of New York state law. It also more broadly addresses animal
cruelty in medical research at Columbia.

The complaint is the first complaint filed by PETA against a research
university in over twenty years. It follows several months of controversy,
during which PETA sought to draw public attention to animal cruelty in
Columbia laboratories and asked the University to amend its policy. PETA
first became aware of experimental practices in Columbia laboratories when
Catherine Dell Orto, a veterinarian then working as a postdoctoral fellow
at Columbia, complained to them about the animals' condition.
