Yomiuri Shimbun
The government of Tottori Prefecture, in partnership with various local
governments in the prefecture, is considering setting a bounty of 2,000 yen for
each coypu captured or killed, starting from April 1.
The policy, which will be implemented subject to approval by the prefectural
assembly--where it faces little opposition--follows sharply increased levels
of damage to crops caused by coypu.
Coypus--small mammals that look like a cross between a rat and a beaver--have
been running amok across Tottori.
Coypus have been a particular pest in the west of the prefecture, but earlier
this year farmers started reporting cases of coypus feasting on rice in
eastern Tottori also.
The prefectural government decided to put a bounty on the head of each coypu
in the face of this wave of mischief.
