What is the connection between Ireland and India? It is paneer. Donegal's
locally produced paneer has reportedly become a top seller among Indians in
Britain.
Donegal Cheese is a small North Western Health Board-supported factory
producing the award-winning cheese that has become a favourite on the plates of
vegetarian Hindu Indians. The paneer is made daily from the milk of dairy herds
grazing on farms in the Fahan and Ludden areas of Donegal. Since it is made
without rennet, the product provides a high-protein, low-fat alternative to meat
that is ideal for vegetarians.
Its project manager, Peter Canning is not surprisingly delighted about the
enterprise which currently only employs 14 member staff. There are plans to
increase the workforce over the next few years. The unique cheese has been granted
the coveted Hygiene Mark from Excellence Ireland.
This 'unique' cheese realised its true potential after Hindus in Britain
discovered it, first at a prestigious food fair at the National Exhibition Centre
(NEC) in Birmingham and then at Food Fest 2001 in Glasgow, where it was voted
most popular new product. Canning said: "Some top chefs sampled our cheese and
said they were very impressed with it. They also gave us some good advice
about marketing the product."
