Bhubaneswar, In yet another instance of growing man-animal conflict, a herd
of 25 elephants strayed from a forest and went on the rampage in a village in
Orissa, officials said Saturday.
There were, however, no casualties.
The elephants came out from the forests in Deogarh district and rushed to
Lahandabud village located on the outskirts of the district headquarter town of
Jharsuguda, 374 km from here, Friday.
Even as they trampled crops, the villagers attempted to drive them away by
beating drums and lighting fires. This prompted the elephants to enter a nursery
run by the state horticulture department, forest official Alekh Chandra Samal
said.
