The Humane Household Products Standard - taking the cruelty out of cleaning!
The BUAV is delighted to bring you some exciting news on its Dirty Secrets
campaign to end animal testing for household products. Read on to hear
about:
* The first two companies to be approved under our Humane Household
Products Standard
* The BUAV's fully updated campaign fact sheet packed with company
testing policies and contact details of which companies to lobby
* A fab new campaign postcard to send to companies urging them to sign
up to our Humane Household Products Standard
* The launch of an Early Day Motion calling for a end to UK animal
tests for household products
* Plus a brand new BUAV Dirty Secrets national petition
The Humane Household Products Standard
Following on from the success of our Humane Cosmetics Standard, our Humane
Household Products Standard was launched in response to public demand for
reliable guidance on genuinely 'not tested on animal's household cleaning
products.
The BUAV team has written to loads of companies inviting them to join, and
we've already received a great deal of interest. Just like our Humane
Cosmetics Standard, just because a company claims to be 'not tested on
animals', it doesn't necessarily mean that their claim is genuine. To be
BUAV approved household product manufacturers must be able to prove that
they:
* Do not conduct or commission animal tests
* Do not buy animal tested ingredients by imposing a verifiable
fixed-cut off date (FCOD)
* Operate a mechanism to ensure that their FCOD is observed throughout
their entire supply-chain
* Submit to an independent audit to guarantee that they 'practice what
they preach'
The first two companies have now been approved by the BUAV!
1. Faith Products Ltd: (Brand: Clear Spring).
The Clear Spring range of household products was the first to be BUAV
approved. The Clear Spring range includes cruelty-free products for the
dishwasher, washing up liquids, window cleaner, liquid detergent and
polishes. Available in health stores and mail order. Telephone: 0161 764
2555. Or shop on line at www.faithinnature.co.uk
2. The Laundry: (Brand: The Laundry).
At the end of March 2004, The Laundry is launching a range of cruelty-free
washing up and laundry liquids. If you would like to go on their mailing
list to receive details of their products when they are launched, email
linens at thelaundry.co.uk or telephone 020 7274 3838.
Cruelty-free Offer!
To encourage consumers to switch to a cruelty-free product, Faith Products
(whose Clear Spring household product range is BUAV approved) is kindly
offering 10% off your first order in their Faith in Nature and/or Clear
Spring ranges when ordered through www.faithinnature.co.uk and using the
quote BV04 - offer ends 31 July 2004.
New BUAV campaign fact sheet!
A fully updated Dirty Secrets fact sheet is now available from the BUAV
packed full of info on company testing policies and practices. It contains a
guide to all the main household products manufacturers on our 'boycott list'
with contact details so you can write to them and urge them to sign up to
the Humane Household Products Standard. To receive a copy by email contact
campaigns at buav.org
Campaign postcards & leaflets
You can also contact companies on our 'boycott list' by sending them one of
our brand new campaign postcards urging them to sign up to the Humane
Household Products Standard.
A brand new Dirty Secrets leaflet is also in production and should be
available in a couple of weeks. Our eye-catching leaflet provides an
introduction to the issue of animal testing for household products, lists
the main companies to avoid and encourages readers to get in touch with the
BUAV to go cruelty-free.
For your supply of campaign postcards or leaflets, email your name and
address to campaigns at buav.org
Ask your MP to sign our EDM
Early Day Motion (EDM) number 738 has just been launched in support of the
BUAV's Dirty Secrets campaign, calling for a total UK ban on animal testing
for household products and ingredients. The EDM runs until the end of the
last Parliamentary session in November, so there is plenty of time for us to
collect as many MP signatures as possible to demonstrate support for a UK
ban. Check out http://edm.ais.co.uk/weblink/html/motion.html/ref=738
To see if your MP has signed already. If not write to them at [name of your
MP], House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA.
To find out which constituency you are in, who your local MP is or how else
to contact them, go to www.locata.co.uk/commons
Collect signatures for our 'household products' petition
If you belong to a local animal rights group, are active at school or have
family and friends interested in animal testing, why not help the BUAV
collect signatures for our national Dirty Secrets petition? In the next day
or two you'll be able to sign on-line by clicking on "Sign Our Petitions" at
www.buav.org but you can also get hold of hard copies by sending your name
and address to campaign at buav.org
ENDS
Animal experiments have:
a 63% failure rate when detecting human carcinogens
a 75-95% failure rate for detecting drug side effects
a 70% failure rate for detecting drugs which cause birth defects
Success rates lower than those achieved by uneducated guesswork.
This is not science!!
