Shimla, Three women risked their lives to save two pet dogs that were
attacked by a leopard in a Himachal Pradesh village.
The incident took place in a mountainous region, 120 km from here, when a
prowling leopard leapt on to the veranda of a house and charged at the two dogs.
The noise awoke Suraksha and her two teenaged nieces Minu and Lovely who saw
through their window a leopard struggling to choke one of the dogs that had a
metal collar around its neck.
Villagers in this region -- where dogs are frequently lifted or killed by
leopards -- often try to protect their dogs by using metal collars so that big
cats find it hard to kill them.
The women opened the door and dragged the other dog into the room.
Showing rare courage, Suraksha then stepped out of the room and dragged the
other dog - that was lying petrified by the leopard's attack - also into the
room. The leopard was barely five feet away.
