As London-based, but New York showing, designer Matthew Williamson, told the
International Herald Tribune: "It's definitely cool to wear fur now. I see
girls like Jade [Jagger] and Kate [Moss] who don't think it's un-PC any more."

Inacio Ribeiro, of British label Clements Ribeiro, has also started using fur
in his designs again, after being highly criticised for doing so in 1997. But
it doesn't seem so very long ago that you were taking a physical risk to wear
real fur in public, particularly in New York, where you would almost
certainly be on the receiving end of verbal abuse, if not red paint, or at least
ketchup.
Even fake fur opened you up to criticism, because the more extreme end of the
anti-fur lobby believe it promotes the real thing.
It is from such quarters that the US Vogue editor, Anna Wintour, who has
always been a champion of real fur - in her pages and on her shoulders - has been
on the receiving end of a barrage of unpleasantness, including hate mail,
threats and dead animals in the mail. Not that it had any effect. She has never
stopped wearing and featuring fur.
