Kenya’s elephant population has almost doubled in the past 15 years following
the ban in ivory trade.
And the Government will not relax its hard-line stance against a campaign to
have the ban relaxed, Vice-President Moody Awori said yesterday.
"The increase in Kenya's elephant population from 16,000 in 1989 to about
28,000 currently led to calls for a relaxation on the ban. We must protect our
elephants by outlawing trade in ivory. Allowing the trade would represent a
serious threat to the survival of the African elephant."
At the Standing Committee meeting in Geneva starting March 13, Awori said,
Kenya would propose better definitions and push for a clear interpretation of
the conditions spelt out at the 12th Conference of Parties in Santiago, Chile,
in October 2002.
