AR-News: (Kenya) Elephant numbers rise after ivory ban

Kenya’s elephant population has almost doubled in the past 15 years following 
the ban in ivory trade.
And the Government will not relax its hard-line stance against a campaign to 
have the ban relaxed, Vice-President Moody Awori said yesterday.
"The increase in Kenya's elephant population from 16,000 in 1989 to about 
28,000 currently led to calls for a relaxation on the ban. We must protect our 
elephants by outlawing trade in ivory. Allowing the trade would represent a 
serious threat to the survival of the African elephant."
At the Standing Committee meeting in Geneva starting March 13, Awori said, 
Kenya would propose better definitions and push for a clear interpretation of 
the conditions spelt out at the 12th Conference of Parties in Santiago, Chile, 
in October 2002.
