CONYERS — The Rockdale County grand jury has declined to indict two people
who were charged with animal cruelty in connection with the deaths of two dogs
found in their back yard.
The charges against Donald Evans Mayes, 42, and Sherry Mayes, 37, in
connection with the February 2003 incident will be dismissed.
“I think it was important that the citizens of Rockdale County had the
opportunity to hear the facts surrounding the case and make a determination as to
what they believed the appropriate action should be,” said District Attorney
Richard Read. “Barring the emergence of any new evidence, this will effectively
end the case.”
The Mayes’ were charged when a deputy of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s
Office was on routine patrol and discovered two dead dogs in the back yard of the
couple’s Park Street residence.
The initial determination was that the animals died as a result of severe
malnutrition.
However, Read said the subsequent investigation indicated there was food and
water available for the animals, and veterinarians who examined the dogs could
not give a definitive cause of death.
