.Washington (AP) - A second surprise federal inspection of the National Zoo
has uncovered more problems.

The Washington post reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (website
- news) made the unannounced inspection on February 9th and 10th. Inspectors
found that 16 metal bars in the Elephant House were bent or bowed and that some
had detached from ceiling supports.

The zoo had until March 1st to make the repairs, but got an extension until
May 1st.

The first surprise inspection, in January, found that some animals weren't
getting annual physicals and that the apes were being fed unconventional food
that could be causing digestive problems.

The report also said that the zoo had fixed most of the problems identified
last July, including housekeeping and sanitation defects in the Bat House and
Elephant House.
