CHARGES SOUGHT IN ANIMAL CRUELTY CASE
Anderson county animal welfare officers have euthanized 69 animals since Monday in a case that will likely result in multiple animal cruelty charges against the animals’ owners, identified as Margaret Nance and her daughter, Kay.

Anderson county authorities were alerted to the animals by neighbors who complained of strong odors and animals whining. When officers entered the Nance mobile home on Freels Lane in Clinton, they discovered dozens of sick and dying dogs and cats.

“Deplorable would be an excellent description,” noted Anderson county Deputy Louis Ridenour. “There were feces, you know, all over the floor and the stench from being closed up in there.. was very bad. You could smell it outside."

Officers removed 31 dogs from Nance’s property on Tuesday and another 38 dogs and cats on Wednesday. All were suffering from serious medical conditions that required humane euthanasia.

Anderson county officials are gathering the evidence necessary to separate file animal cruelty charges for each live animal removed from Nance’s home. Although these charges are classified as misdemeanors, each can carry a penalty of up to one year in prison.
