North America's urban population is growing in leaps and bounds, thanks to a
proliferation of pets. With household animals rivalling humans in number,
the continent's pet industry, an exemplary command-and-control economy that
operates almost entirely without subsidy, has grown into a
$44-billion-a-year mammoth. Urbanites should be especially grateful that our
cities are going to the dogs -- nothing more civilizes us.
