More monkeys belonging to a highly endangered species from India are bred at
the Assiniboine Park Zoo than in any other facility in the world. BREEDING
SUCCESS
Curator Bob Wrigley credits the local success of breeding the lion-tailed
macaque to a relaxed setting at the Winnipeg Zoo where more than 100 babies have
been born, including four last year.
Unlike at other zoos, animals here are not put under every year for physical
exams. Avoiding the stressful ordeal might be what prompts more monkey
business between the lively primates.
"We try to just let them be monkeys, so perhaps they're less stressed out and
reproduce very well for us," said Wrigley, adding locally-born offspring are
sent to other zoos all over the world.
The same Winnipeg zoo keepers have worked with the monkeys for the last two
decades. Their familiarity comes in handy to recognize any problems while still
in the early stages, Wrigley said.
There are only 6,000 lion-tailed macaques still living in the wild in India
and their habitat is quickly shrinking as more forests are cut down to create
farm land.
