A number of animal species in the Bonfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary in the Sekyere
East District of Ashanti face the threat of extinction as a result of
bushfires.
The worse affected are the porcupine (Apese), tree pauquolin (Aprawa) and
snails.
Already, about one-third of the sanctuary’s total forest cover of 53 square
kilometres has been completely destroyed by bushfires.
Mr. James Pourideme, Senior Wildlife Officer in-charge of the Kumawu area,
was speaking at a three-day anti-bushfire training workshop organised for 44
fire volunteers and six wildlife guards at Bodomase.
