A property damage accident earlier this week caused a lot of people to worry
over spilled milk.
Columbia City fire chief Tom LaRue said it happened when his department
received a call from the Columbia City Police Department sometime before 10 p.m.
Monday, Feb. 23.

Apparently, an open compartment on a milk truck allowed several crates full
of bottles of chocolate milk to dump onto the pavement at State route 9 and
U.S. 30.

"Many of them split open and burst, releasing chocolate milk all over the
intersection," LaRue said.

"The entire westbound lane of U.S. 30 just west of State road 9 was closed
for a short period of time - approximately an hour to hour-and-a-half," he added.

The spill was estimated to be close to 10 gallons - too close to simply wash
down the drain. A higher authority would be needed to decide what to do with
all that spilled milk.

Since the fire department is responsible for dealing with hazardous
materials, it was called in to handle the problem.

"We were thinking about (washing it down), but I thought I'd better call IDEM
just to make sure, because we were close to that 10-gallon mark where it
becomes an importable amount of hazardous material," LaRue said. "It's a
reportable amount.
