SASKATOON - Conservation officers are alarmed by reports of snowmobilers
chasing wildlife, saying that high-performance snow vehicles and an increase in
the price of fur are making it a big problem.
The majority of snowmobilers consider it a benefit of their hobby to see
wildlife while riding the trails on a winter day. Some, however, see wildlife as
targets for their muscle machines.
But conservation officer Doug Lucyshyn says even short chases can be deadly
to animals.
Snowmobilers warned against terrorizing wildlife.
"Most animals in Saskatchewan just have a hard enough time surviving the
winter as it is," he says, "when you chase them with a snowmobile, they become
traumatized...we see this with white-tail deer in southern Saskatchewan."
When deer are forced to run too much, their lungs can freeze which can
eventually kill them.
