During a tense moment Saturday, Independence Animal Control Officer James
Jamerson subdues a male pit bull at 2206 S. Cedar Ave. Earlier, the dog bit
mail carrier Steve Puterbaugh, who is OK. The worman in red is a friend of the
dog's handler, who brought the dog to authorities after the handler left. Two
Independence police officers were nearby to react, had the dog bitten Jamerson.

Saturday was the second time in Steve Puterbaugh's 25-year career he has been
attacked by a pit bull.
The Independence mail carrier, with bandages from his right elbow to his
hand, was shook up but talkative as he described the large male pit bull terrier
that ran him down Saturday morning at 2206 S. Cedar Ave.
"I was delivering mail to the mailbox," Puterbaugh said. "(The handler) threw
the door open and he was right on me. He was biting at me before I could do
anything. She came running out and pulled him off of me. She had to sit on him
to get him off of me."
Standing in the street, Puterbaugh rolled back the bandages to reveal the
teeth marks. Nearby, police and animal control officers searched the property for
the handler, identified as Lisa Parker, and the dog, named Pete.
