Do pets grieve? In order to answer this question, we did some research and
recalled some personal experiences.
Animal behaviorists' studies indicate that animals can form very firm
attachments with each other. Owners will often notice some changes in the pets left
behind. In fact, grieving pet(s) may become restless, anxious, depressed and
clingy. There may also be much sighing, along with sleep and eating
disturbances, and excessive barking or meowing. Often, grieving pets will search for their
dead companions and crave more attention from their owners.

Owners can help grieving pets by following these recommendations: Keep the
surviving pet(s) routines as normal as possible. But, if your cat is restless or
looking for her companion, encourage play activities. If you've never used
catnip with her, now would be a good time. Throw a catnip party once or twice a
week for her so she can let loose. Fill a sock with a good-quality loose
catnip and let your kitty unwind.
