A battle is looming over new livestock export contracts offered by South
Australian-based exporter SAMEX, which propose paying producers when cattle and
sheep are actually on board the vessel, rather than at the feedlot.
SAMEX lost $80,000 when protests by animal activists stopped the trade from
the Port of Portland last year.
Victorian farmers are outraged, saying that if shipments are cancelled, they
risk losing $11 a head.
But the company's Viv Burton says the new contracts are designed to spread
the liability of live shipments.
