TARBORO -- Superior Court Judge Frank Brown ruled during a special hearing
Friday that the 32 pit bulls seized by the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department
on Feb. 23 were not adoptable and ordered them to be euthanized.
The animals were allegedly part of a dog fighting ring that the sheriff's
department uncovered down a dirt path of a Rocky Mount home. The dogs were held
at the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter where they were all euthanized on
Friday, said Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight.
Suspects Timothy Lafon Murphy, 27, Rodale Detrice Cutler, 23, Joseph Donnelle
Hussey, 18, all of Rocky Mount, attended the hearing but were not allowed to
testify for or against the euthanization. A fourth suspect, Roy Junior
Tillery, 47, also of Rocky Mount, did not attend. The four were charged with 32
counts of animal cruelty and placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under
$150,000 bonds.
