The Environment Ministry prosecuted more environmental offenses in 2003 than
in 2002 and stiffened air pollution standards, according to figures the
ministry released Monday.

Environment Minister Yehudit Naot and Director-General Dr. Miki Haran told
reporters in Jerusalem that in the past year the ministry prosecuted 116
environmental offenders, 113 of whom were convicted. In 2002, the ministry prosecuted
82 offenders.

Naot and Haran also said they managed to introduce several important
government decisions, including harsher air-pollution standards in annual vehicle
emissions testing, which culminated in the removal of polluting vehicles from the
country's roads.

The ministry tested the emissions of 14,928 vehicles last year, compared to
2,865 in 2002. Some 858 vehicles were taken off the road due to emission levels
higher than the law permits.
