[opinion from Syracuse Post Standard]

Can't anyone take a joke anymore?

The other night I approached a portly man grooming two basketball teams of
donkeys behind the gym at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square.

"Hi," I announced. "I'm here to see you abuse your donkeys."

"You can't hurt my feelings because I know in my heart I take care of my
animals," the man replied, not looking up. He soon offered a Biblical defense.

"Christ our Lord rode a donkey."

Well, yes. But could He dunk?

Only Mel Gibson knows for sure. As for me, I'm more focused on donkey
basketball in the hear-and-now. Is it cruel to donkeys and desensitizing
to humans, as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
maintains. Or is donkey basketball - a perennial fund-raiser for schools
and other organizations in which players shoot baskets from donkey-back -
harmless idiocy?
