London - The potential risks of hormone replacement therapy could have been
exposed much earlier if data from trials conducted by pharmaceutical
companies had been made publicly available, according to an article in the
British Medical Journal (BMJ) this week.
The two authors remind readers that the US Women's Health Initiative (WHI)
trial was stopped in 2002 when data showed that after 5 years the balance of
benefits from combined hormone replacement therapy did not compensate for an
increased risk of heart-related events.
