Around eight to 10 cases of dog bite are reported in Chembur everyday
Shiv Sena corporator Bala Sawant’s decision to approach the Supreme Court
seeking a review of a Bombay High Court ban on killing of stray dogs has divided
people into two camps.
While pro-animal activists say dogs too have a right to live, the other group
says killing the dogs will end menace of dog bites. metro speaks to two
residents for their opinion.

“I do not think the Supreme Court will review the ban on killing of stray
dogs passed by the high court. It is not right to kill hundreds of dogs. Dogs
have as much right to live as humans do. Some say stray dogs are a menace as they
bite people. But to put down all the dogs for this reason is not fair.
Also, dogs do not bite without any provocation. Many dogs turn aggressive if
they do not get food. If people start feeding these dogs, the problem of dog
bites will be curtailed.
“BMC is trying to sterilise dogs but the scheme is not effective
as around 200 pups are born every day and BMC can sterilise only 35-40 dogs a
day. Animal welfare organisations should take steps to strengthen the
sterilisation drive as it is the only solution.”

not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing."
