Green groups are urging Sydney's Taronga Zoo to abandon efforts to purchase
four elephants from Thailand.
New South Wales Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says documents obtained under Freedom
of Information show the zoo has been negotiating for the past three years to
import two adult female and two baby elephants in exchange for native wildlife.
A former zookeeper herself, she says keeping elephants in enclosures is
outdated and cruel.
Mark Pearson, from Animal Liberation, says the animals are domesticated
through pain and fear.
"They're having their spirits crushed by this method, and the Thai Government
acknowledges that this is a typical way that the elephants will be broken in
or are broken in," he said.
"Any elephant which comes to Australia from Thailand has experienced this."
"The world is a dangerous place,
not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing."
