FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
20th Annual observance of The Great American Meatout, free public community feast at Somerset Radio Shack on March 20th, followed by a free, double-feature film screening at Zafra Vegetarian Restaurant at 8:00 pm
“The purpose of the Meatout event is to encourage people to explore the delights and benefits of a plant-based diet, while promoting the availability and selection of meat and dairy alternatives in mainstream grocery stores, restaurants, and catering operations.”
"Kick the meat habit (at least for a day) and explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains."
North Brunswick, NJ, February 27th, 2004 –The Human Race is organizing two free public events on March 20th in conjunction with Zafra Vegetarian Restaurant and Radio Shack with special guests, the New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance (NJARA) and Rogers’ Rescues (complete with their “Traveling Adoptable Mutt Show”), to participate in the international, grassroots observance known as “The Great American Meatout”.
The first event, a free community feast, featuring a variety of savory meatless foods and delectable, dairy free deserts from ZAFRA Vegetarian Restaurant along with educational exhibits, music and video. The daytime event will take place between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm at Radio Shack in Rutgers Plaza, 940 Easton Ave, Somerset, NJ 08873. The second event; “Dinner and a Movie”, a free, double-feature film screening of Tribe of Heart’s multiple-award winning documentaries, “The Witness” followed by “Peaceable Kingdom”, starting at 8:00 at ZAFRA Vegetarian Restaurant, 46 Paterson Street, New Brunswick, NJ. ZAFRA will be offering a special, all you can eat buffet for $12 to compliment the screenings.
A little about the evening’s films: The Witness tells the inspiring and life-affirming story of Eddie Lama, a tough construction contractor from Brooklyn whose life went from one of despair and hopelessness to one of compassion and activism after a chance encounter with a kitten. Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist of the Los Angeles Times, Howard Rosenberg, said: “The Witness is one man’s truth that cries out for mass exposure,” which accounts for its extraordinary support from everyday people who have thus far held more than 150 community screenings in 42 states, in venues ranging from libraries and churches to college campuses and movie theatres, often with theatre owners donating the space for the events.
About Peaceable Kingdom: “At a time when the public is more concerned than ever about the health and environmental problems associated with large-scale factory farming, Peaceable Kingdom explores another angle of this unfolding story: the interconnected life journeys of farm animals, former farmers, and animal rescuers struggling against an out of control industrial system.
Breaking generations of silence in the farm community, Peaceable Kingdom weaves together themes of respect, forgiveness, commitment, and healing, offering a vision of a more peaceful world that is well within our reach.
While we knew Peaceable Kingdom was going to explore some painful truths, we also wanted it to be a story of healing and transformation. We wanted our audience to leave the theater feeling not only better informed, but also hopeful, inspired, and awakened to their own capacity to make a difference." --The Filmmakers
The Witness & Peaceable Kingdom were produced by James LaVeck and directed by Jenny Stein, Co-founders of Tribe of Heart. Based in Ithaca, NY, Tribe of Heart is a non-profit organization that produces films and educational programs that empower the efforts of people who wish to teach compassion in their communities. The Witness and Peaceable Kingdom is the first two completed documentaries of four in an anthology titled “Animal People.”
