This morning at 4:30 I awoke to the smell of smoke and found one of the pig
shelters on fire. The heavy snow had collapsed the roof and driven the heat
bulb into the hay.
The neighbors came to help and we got everyone out but we don't know about
smoke inhalation issues.. they were in dense smoke for a long time as the hay
smoldered before it burst into flame. It was pitch dark so I couldn't see that
the building had collapsed as I went around trying to find the source of the
smoke smell. One crippled pig, Evita, has minor burns but managed to get out
before any serious damage as far as I can tell.
We have 6 inches of wet snow, trees and branches down everywhere and the pigs
refused to come out into the snow, preferring to choke to death in the smoke.
I had to crawl into the building as it burned to drive them out and then
force them out of the fenced area entirely as they kept trying to go back in. I
have always heard about animals going back into a burning building but I guess
never really believed it.
So do not expect any emails for a couple days as I will be trying to tend the
pigs who may be hurt and put up a new shelter . Nor will I be answering the
phone much.. I know there are a lot of rescue issues and transports going on
that I am involved in.. contact Helen <A HREF="mailto:angelsmommy at earthlink.net">angelsmommy at earthlink.net</A>, Jackie <A HREF="mailto:jjwagoner at highland.net">
jjwagoner at highland.net</A> or Vivi <A HREF="mailto:vivi at caneyfork.net">vivi at caneyfork.net</A> for help with them (depending on
area). Getting these sanctuary pigs safe if the first priority today.
If you have some extra pocket change I could use some help with materials for
a new small barn.

Animals are neither property, nor pets; they are companions. We share this
highway we travel to wherever it ultimately leads.
