MIDDLEBOROUGH -- A group of local volunteers wants to help out at the town's
animal shelter, but the police chief and selectmen have turned down the offer,
citing liability concerns.
The group's directors say they hope they can come up with a way to allay the
concerns. Town officials, however, say they doubt that the group, New England
Animal Rescue Inc., can guarantee that the town would have no liability.
The town's animal shelter can house up to 26 dogs. Animal control officer
Bill Wyatt says he generally cares for 15 to 18 dogs at a time. The shelter is
run virtually on a ''no-kill" basis, with Wyatt returning dogs to their owners
when the animals are licensed or finding them new homes.
New England Animal Rescue recently offered to clean the kennels and feed the
dogs at the shelter, and promised to screen volunteers and train them.
''Everyone has either rescue group experience or has worked at a shelter before,"
said the group's president, Tracy Hazeldine.
The group was incorporated recently as a nonprofit organization, and most of
its members are Middleborough residents.
