Thailand has much explaining to do ahead of the CITES (Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species) conference to be held in Bangkok in
October, from the suspicious discovery of more than 100 orang-utans at a private zoo
to the continued sale of ivory products at some Bangkok hotels.
"Failure to present clear reports on these subjects of concern may lead to
punishment by CITES-member countries," Robert Mather, the representative of the
World Wildlife Fund in Thailand, said yesterday.
He said CITES had already slapped Thailand with sanctions on international
floral and fauna trade once before, in 1991. The damage caused by the sanctions
was estimated to range from hundreds of millions of baht to as much as Bt4
billion.
