An animal rights group in Athens is asking Athens City Council to adopt a new
ordinance that would make it illegal to sell or give away an adult dog or cat
that is not spayed or neutered, with the exception of pets sold by registered
breeders.
The proposed ordinance also would require all dogs or cats to have microchips
implanted in them before they could be sold or given away.
While supporters of the proposal say the ordinance is mainly intended to curb
animal overpopulation in Athens, it also appears to be aimed at the planned
Petland store, which is proposed for the new Continental Properties development
on East State Street. Petland stores sell animals, often-purebred, and the
store does not require that the pets are spayed or neutered.
