The Trenton Kennel Club donated a bulletproof vest to Hero, a 3-year-old
Czechoslovakian German shepherd police dog.

LAWRENCE — She may have four legs instead of two but she is just as
valuable as any other police officer. Being first on the scene of a narcotics bust
or responding to a report of a missing child means Hero, a 3-year-old
Czechoslovakian German shepherd, could be put in the line of fire.
That is why the Trenton Kennel Club recently donated a bulletproof vest to
the Washington Township Police Department for Hero to wear when she is on the
job. The club presented the vest to Patrolman Shawn Emmons, the officer in
charge of training Hero, at its monthly meeting at the Lawrence Township Public
Library on Tuesday.
"We have a lot of warehouses and large buildings in town and a dog can
sniff out drugs or find missing children a lot quicker and can cover more area
then an officer," Officer Emmons said. "But that also means the dog might be the
first one in the building and could be in danger if someone in there has a
weapon."
