Distraught and unshaven, 70-year-old Richard Barker leaned heavily on the
counter at the county animal shelter, filling out the paperwork to give up his
tabbies, Billy Boy and Sissy.

Richard Barker sits inside his condo with his cat, Frosty, and his dog,
Prince. Barker took in the abandoned, the injured, the stray and the lost, and at
one point, had 24 at one time.

During his five years in Walkesa, Barker has accumulated 12 cats and dogs.
The abandoned, the injured and the lost seem to find him. He has adopted nine
cats and three dogs, and tended to the few strays that come and go.

Now it is Barker who has to go.

An ailing ex-wife in Atlanta needs his help, and he can't take most of his
animals. He is depending on the Cherokee County Animal Shelter to find them new
homes.

"I'm just devastated," Barker said. "It's the hardest thing I've ever had to
do. They're my refuge."
