A GAMEKEEPER convicted of intentionally destroying the nest and eggs of a
rare bird of prey faces up to six months' prison today.
John Cripps, aged 60, used tree climbing spikes to disturb the goshawk nest
in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire, after he told a police wildlife officer
that too many of the birds were attacking grouse.
He kept a diary with entries believed to relate to the persecution of other
species in the area.
Cripps, who lives in a gamekeeper's cottage beside Derwent Reservoir in
Ronksley near Bamford, was found guilty of three offences under the Wildlife and
Countryside Act 1981 after a three-day trial.
