MUNCIE - The U.S. Humane Society says it might file a misconduct complaint
against Judi Calhoun, the deputy prosecutor who prosecuted Abel Alves and Carol
Blakney.
"This whole trial is an outrage," said Christopher Bedford, senior campaign
coordinator for farm animals and sustainable agriculture at the Humane Society.
"Carol Blakney was convicted of trespass for sitting in her car on a public
road," Bedford said. "She should never have been charged. Abel Alves was
convicted of getting out of his car and taking a picture of a hog barn while
standing on a public road. He should never have been charged."
Bedford, of Des Moines, was in Muncie for the couple's sentencing Tuesday.
Waterkeeper Alliance President Robert F. Kennedy Jr. issued the following
statement:
"Every American should be outraged by these convictions. This prosecution has
been a malicious effort to stifle dissent and intimidate concerned citizens
into silence. Criminalizing modern citizen watchdogs like Professor Abel and
Carol Blakney undermines the core value of our democracy. We all should be
appalled by these kind of strong arm tactics used by livestock factory operators to
shield their polluting practices from public scrutiny."
