Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said he had a feeling someone might try
to steal some of the dogs confiscated Monday in a dog-fighting investigation.
At about 1 a.m. Tuesday, deputies spotted a car headed toward the animal
shelter behind the Edgecombe County Health Department on Main Street. After
authorities stopped the vehicle, they found two men inside, including Timothy Lafon
Murphy, brother of one of four suspects arrested Monday in connection with
drugs, illegal dog fighting and several pieces of stolen property.
"We knew somebody would be doing this, so we did a stakeout," Knight said.
Authorities charged Murphy, 27, of the 700 block of Marlee Drive and
23-year-old Rodale Detrice Cutler of the 1700 block of Windsor Drive with possession
of burglary tools. Bonds for both suspects were set at $3,000.
