AR-News: (Spain) Global Environment Facility Supports Expansion of Addo Elephant National

Washington, January 24, 2004 - The World Bank today approved a US$5.5 million 
grant from the Global Environment Facility to conserve and expand the Addo 
Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The total 
overall investment in the Park will amount to US$40 million, including private 
sector and government investments. 

The grant will fund a project to assist South African National Parks’ 
(SANParks) efforts to conserve representation of five of the country’s seven 
terrestrial biomes, to create a major new adjoining marine reserve, and to enhance 
socio-economic opportunities for the impoverished Eastern Cape, which has a total 
population of nine million people.
