When McDonald's Corp., among the biggest buyers of beef worldwide, starts
demanding better regulation of the cattle industry, it's time for the U.S.
Department of Agriculture to listen.

Last week, Chief Executive James Cantalupo told the USDA that he wants
more accountability from the firm's suppliers, including "full
traceability in animals." So do lawmakers from farm states, who have
proposed giving the Agriculture Department $175 million to start a
mandatory U.S. livestock identification program. The ID program is vital
for the public's protection and to convince other nations that the United
States is serious about tracing animals that may get mad cow disease.
