BOSTON Critics of an eight-year ban on leg-hold traps are renewing a push
on Beacon Hill to make it easier to trap beavers, arguing that it could
help undo the damage caused by the growing population of the industrious
critters.
Rep. Mark Carron, a Southbridge Democrat, has filed a bill that would
repeal the state's ban on leg-hold traps outright. Another bill would
continue to outlaw the leg-hold traps, but allow trappers to use another
banned device they say is efficient and humane.
Both proposals face opposition from animal-rights activists opposed to
easing restrictions on trapping.
...
Massachusetts banned the use of steel-jawed leg-hold traps in 1975. In
1996, after an emotionally charged campaign that pitted animal rights
activists against sportsmen and trappers, voters approved a statewide
initiative that banned padded, or soft leg-hold traps and almost every
other trapping device, with the exception of box or cage traps.
Animal advocates argued that the leg-hold traps were inhumane and
endangered any manner of animal, wild or domestic, that got caught in the
device.
